Not being able to do business networking because I’m under 21…

There are plenty of awesome web 2.0 events out there, and as we all know, web geeks like to drink. A lot. Many of these events are held at bars. SF Beta is an amazing event led by an amazing organizer, but I’m not allowed to go in because the bouncers at the door check everybody’s ID!!! What the hell! I’m 17 and haven’t yet gotten into drinking or (drugs) and I just want to meet people, but these stupid laws won’t even let me be in a bar without getting in trouble. Really not fair for someone with positive intentions.
I thought about this for a while, and most of my friends seem to agree. If I wanted to drink, I easily have access to alcohol. My friends have it easily accessible, I’m invited to plenty of private parties where there’s an open bar, and the opportunities are endless. Except, when it comes to innocent networking at innocent web 2.0 parties, I’m not allowed to attend because the stupid law says so. Boo.

My advice to you: start drinking heavily.
Also, fake ID.

Hey, I ran into you at the Googleplex the other day during GDD07. I know your frustration being that I just turned 21 in May. There have been a number of tech events I have wanted to attend but couldn’t and it can be rather disappointing. I will say it is rather hard to get the attention you probably deserve but I guess its just one of those things you have to wait for. The world has it’s views of children and in general most 17 year olds are not out there to do business like yourself. As a result there is aprehention towards those in your age group. Its unfortunate but true.
More important then all of this is the real reason behind it all. Open bar is only achieved with the insurance companies when event organizers make it easy to tell who can drink and who cant. Typically, its easier to just turn those away who can’t drink then to risk giving sneaky minors alcohol. Plus coupled with the above thoughts on worldly views of minors it seems to make perfect since. Like I said, sad but true.
